Eligibility
Submitter Eligibility
- We welcome submissions from high school and university students interested in Book Reviews, Student Rights & Education, Opinions, and Politics.
- We prioritize submissions from student writers, particularly high school and university students. However, submissions from recent graduates or young independent writers may also be considered.
- Writers do not need to be based in Taiwan, but submissions should be relevant to Taiwanese, Asian, Global, or youth perspectives.
- No prior publication experience is required. We welcome both experienced and first-time contributors.
Quality Standards
Submission Quality Standards
- Tell a story, not facts.
- We don't require submitters to "write like Shakespeare." As long as the submission is original, clear, and well-structured, we will approve it for publication.
- Submissions may be written in English or Traditional Chinese. Writers should submit in the language they can express their argument most clearly in.
Originality & AI
Plagiarism, Originality, and AI Use Policy
- Submitted works must be original. Plagiarism checks will be conducted during the review process — copied works will be rejected immediately.
- Any paraphrased text must be declared with attribution of credit to the original author.
- Submitters are prohibited from using generative AI to write their submissions. Editors may investigate suspected AI-generated submissions; AI-generated work will be rejected immediately.
- AI may be used for grammar and editing purposes.
- Submitters must disclose substantial AI assistance.
- Previously published work must be disclosed.
- The core argument and writing must be the author's own.
- Editors reserve the right to reject submissions for any guideline violations.
- Editors may ask about the writing process if needed.
Rights
Rights and Publication Permission
- Submitters keep ownership of their published works.
- By submitting, authors give Formosa Review permission to publish their work and share excerpts on social media with credit.
Ethics
Ethics and Conflict of Interest
Submissions that contain any of the following are strictly prohibited:
- Hate speech
- Personal attacks
- Doxxing
- Defamatory accusations
- Criticism of institutions, policies, and public ideas is allowed. Claims about individuals must be handled carefully and supported.
- Writers should disclose if they are personally involved in the issue.
- Leadership roles, organizational ties, sponsorships, or financial interests should be stated if relevant (e.g. if you write about a school club you run).

Accepted submission types include:
- Book reviews
- Student rights, education, and related topics
- Opinion essays
- Political analysis
- We may expand accepted categories in the future. Feel free to suggest new verticals through editorial@formosareview.org.
- We are open to topics of all scopes, as long as they fit the publication's mission.
- Different article types have different corresponding word counts and submission guidelines. Refer to the Article Types page for more information.
Citations
Evidence, Citations, and Factual Accuracy
- Factual claims should be supported; data and statistics must include sources; quotes must be attributed.
- Writers are responsible for accuracy.
- Editors may request source clarification.
Process
Editorial Process
- Writers must create a Formosa Review account before submitting their work.
- After submission, the editorial team will receive and screen the piece.
- If the submission requires editorial review, it will be assigned to an editor or reviewer for evaluation.
- The editorial team may make minor grammar, formatting, or style edits before publication.
- Major content changes will not be made without the writer's approval.
The editorial team will make one of the following decisions:
- Accepted: the piece is approved for publication. The writer will receive an acceptance email along with publication details and final proofing information.
- Revision requested: the writer is asked to revise and resubmit. The writer may choose whether to revise; revised submissions will be reviewed again before a final decision is made.
- Rejected: the piece will not be published. The writer will receive an email notification.
